Margaret H. NowellA native of Spartanburg, Margaret Nowell grew up attending Spartanburg County District Seven schools before attending college at the University of Georgia, where she graduated cum laude with dual degrees in Journalism and Family and Consumer Sciences and a minor in Spanish. While at the University of Georgia, Maggie was a member of the NCAA Division I women’s track and cross country teams and received recognition on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.

After earning her undergraduate degrees, Maggie matriculated to the University of South Carolina School of Law, receiving her Juris Doctor law degree in 2011.  While in law school, Maggie was a member of the Mock Trial Bar, through which she received the distinguished Reese D. Williams Trial Advocacy Award.  She was also a member of the Moot Court Bar, where she received honorable distinction as a member of the Order of the Barristers.  During her summers in law school, Maggie served as an intern in the Seventh Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Spartanburg and was a summer law clerk to the Honorable Kay G. Hearn at the South Carolina Supreme Court.

Upon graduating from law school, Maggie returned to her home town of Spartanburg, where she began her practice with The Cate Law Firm in 2011.  Maggie devotes her practice exclusively to family law, handling matters ranging from custody and child support issues to adoption, divorce, and just about everything in between. In 2014, Maggie was selected by the Spartanburg County Bar Association to receive the C. Bruce Littlejohn Young Lawyer Award for her contributions to the Spartanburg legal community. Maggie was also named to the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys’ Ten Best for South Carolina in 2015.

In her spare time Maggie serves her community in a variety of ways, including serving as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the Hope Center for Children. She has also served on the board of the Converse Heights Neighborhood Association and the Spartanburg County Bar Cinderella Project Committee.

Along with her colleagues at The Cate Law Firm, Maggie understands the hardship family law matters can create and the importance of helping clients through these difficult times with compassion, dependability, and respect.  Here at The Cate Law Firm, that’s our goal and commitment.
